Exercise
“Exercise is the most potent therapeutic intervention in medicine.”
- Dr. C. Everett Koop
For people with a history of overweight and obesity, exercise is an essential element of sustained weight loss. Exercise can also contribute modestly to the rapid weight loss that Jumpstart participants typically experience.
Weight loss can furthermore lead to remarkable improvements in health risks such as diabetes or pre-diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and metabolic syndrome among others. Daily exercise can dramatically improve those same health risks. Weight loss and daily exercise combined lead to a more than additive effect on improvements in health risk than exercise or weight loss alone. As a result, at Jumpstart we guide participants toward their weight loss goals while making lifestyle changes in exercise and diet as well as behavior as it relates to both.
For diet participants, the most commonly cited barrier to lack of physical activity is a “lack of time.” (Pate et al., JAMA, 1994) At Jumpstart, we will work with you to establish an exercise routine that is suited to your schedule, convenient to your home or office, within your budget, and focused on activities that you can enjoy for the rest of your life. If desired, we can help you establish contact with knowledgeable exercise professionals who can develop an exercise regimen individualized to your health status, desires, and needs.
For ongoing support, nutrition education, medical supervision, and exercise recommendations, the team at Jumpstart is there for you.
